Peugeot 908 HDi FAP Hybrid Racer Debuts, Fails To Charge Audience

Recently, Peugeot unveiled their new green Le Mans contender, the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP Hybrid Racer. Although heralded as a major achievement in the racing industry and praised for its environmental progressiveness, I am not enthused. If an automobile doesn’t translate into a real world application, like the Peugeot 908 hybrid racer largely fails to do, then I’m just not interested. To be perfectly honest, I think dropping that kind of cash to engineer a top performance race car that stores any unused kinetic energy is a waste. When was the last time a Formula 1 racer interrupted his crew chief by saying, “Well yes Hank, 0-60mph in under 3 seconds is very impressive, but what kind of gas mileage does it get?”

I’ll hand it to Peugeot though, the design department did a hell of a job creating an aesthetic for the 908 HDi that was both sleeking and imposing, in an impending-alien-probe sort of way. Bottom line: if this were street legal, I’d be all over it, but as it stands, it doesn’t seem particularly exciting.

2008 Lotus Elise SC

Lotus Elise SC
A Red Lotus Elise SC

Ever since my best friend in High School had a 1986 Fiat Bertone, I have had a fondness for mid-engine sports cars. Such a bare bones and unashamedly single-minded vehicle made it a unique contrast to the Mustangs and Camaros that were the typical car selection of a teenage boy in my hometown.

Sure the muscle cars always had more horsepower and straight ahead top speed. But with the engine screaming just behind your ears, it handled the extreme curves of the roads that wind through the mountains where I lived so well that you felt you were ready to compete in a GT road race. Fast forward to the 2008 Lotus Elise SC, a car that does so much right, it may be the best pure sports car in the world.

The Lotus Elise SC is essentially a supercharged version of the entry-level 190-hp Elise. A 1.8 liter DOHC putting out 217 horsepower does not sound especially impressive, but in a car that weighs only about 2,000 pounds it is more than plenty. Weight is a big part of what makes this car work so well. The Lotus-designed lightweight chassis is constructed of epoxy-bonded aluminum and steel rear subframe wrapped in a composite fiberglass body.

The Toyota-engineered engine is coupled with a Magnusson supercharger that gives the Elise SC a top speed of 150 mph propels the car to 60 mph in a respectable 4.4 seconds. The SC has the same engine used in the upscale Exige, but with a different supercharger that Lotus engineers tuned to coax out a similar power output while maintaining 20-26 mpg. In something so small, so light this performance can only be described as thrilling.

Agility is the first test. Not the cars, but yours. As you climb, fall or basically crawl into the Elise you become quite aware of its proportions. The Elise is just 44 inches tall, 73 inches wide and 149 inches long making it shorter than the diminutive Toyota Yaris.

The available options and interior is not overflowing with amenities, though you do get a leather wrapped steering wheel, seats and door trim, AC, electric windows, airbags, antilock brakes and even (gasp) a cupholder. Traction control and limited slip differential are also available.

The white on black gauges that stare you in the face are effective in communicating to the driver that this is a vehicle that you will drive, not the other way around. The driver’s attention is mandatory if you are planning on taking corners at any significant speed. Steering is responsive and precise and the ride is on the very firm side but completely appropriate and befitting the racecar feel of the SC. The driving pleasure of the SC more than overcomes any minor lack of manners or comfort. In fact, the ride is surprisingly pleasant compared to what would be expected of such an overtly racecar oriented vehicle.

For those that are looking for the automotive equivalent of a booty call, the base price of $54,000 is not that much to ask. When’s the last time an impractical $54,000 car was considered affordable? But for a car that delivers like few can, it’s a downright bargain.

A look back at the AMC Eagle and the mini-tank that was

There was a time back in the early 80’s when AWD in cars was not so familiar. Even the SUV was yet to be hatched on the American consumer. It was the AMC Eagle that brough fuel economy and AWD safety to the sedan (er, wagon) market, or so they said.
The AMC Eagle wagon holds a special place in my own history as my family found the means to burn through two of them. During those West Virginia Winter months there was never a concern that snow or ice would keep us from getting to a grocery store that was closed due to the weather (grrr). There was no form of inclimate weather that could come between our Eagle and our intended destination. However the same could not be said for those transmissions we ran through before moving on in our modern car shopping.
Nothing like a good look back to remind us why we shop for the things we do in cars. Just the same let’s take a look at what those marketing geniuses at AMC put together to get Americans excited about the then new Eagle.

A special thanks to those at Jalopnik for that reminder.

Transformers gives the New Camaro a leading role

Companies have been using product placement in movies for years, but GM hit the jackpot when Michael Bay was on the look-out for cars for the upcoming Transformers movie. Many of the prominent good guy roles, known to many of us as Autobots, have been assigned to various GM vehicles. The biggest change to come from the selection of GM however is in the role of Bumblebee.

Transformers the Movie Bumblebee

In the animated TV series Bumblebee was a friendly VW Beetle. For the live-action Transformers Movie BumbleBee has been fashioned out of a late 70’s model Camaro that receives a face-lift in the movie to resemble the new Camaro concept due out in 2009. For any purists of the comic book and 80’s cartoons of the Transformers making such a change in the body of Bumblebee may be difficult to swallow. But for the characters sake and for GM’s benefit this might be the best move imaginable.

Transformers the Movie Bumblebee

With the new Chevy Camaro receiving a prominent role in the Transformers movie they are helping to guarantee the spotlight on a car that will not reach showrooms until 2009. Between toy sales, video game sales, and movie sales when it comes out on DVD GM may be assured that the hype for their new Camaro will remain high until it is unleashed onto the Auto Market. And may also acquire a new crop of Camaro loyalist whose first experience with the car will be in a Bumblebee transformable toy.

Viper converted into a police car

You know how it is, your driving along minding your own business possibly going slightly over the thirty five miles per hour speed limit, when suddenly you find that there is a police traffic cop bearing down on you, what do you do?

Well you are driving a 2000 Dodge Viper, so why not make a run for it!

This is exactly what happen, Officer Mario Marzetta of the Plainfield Police Department, heard the car coming way before he could even see it, speeding along Essington Road, passing the officer at around 127 mph, in a 35 mph zone.

viper

The driver was eventually stopped and charged with felony fleeing and eluding the police, this was after he had driven at speed through interchanges and on into an industrial park where he tried to hide from the police by parking the in a parking lot, unfortunately there are not many Dodge Vipers around with custom paint jobs, including a stars and stripes painted on the hood.

The driver was unaware of the powers of the police, they can seize any vehicle that is involved in a felony, and in this case that is exactly what the police dept has done. The Dodge Viper has now been repainted in the police dept colors and has a set of lights on the roof too.

Now do you think that speeding through Plainfield is a fun idea? Obviously not all seized vehicles are turned into police cars most are sold at auction.

With the looming 2009 model year GM plans to stay ahead of the curve (if not muscle right through it) with their 600-horsepower Cadillac CTS-V. In the 2007 CTS-V resides a very respectable 400-horsepower power-plant based on the current Corvette platform. So since GM has developed their new 7.0 liter LS7 Corvette engine it seems to make perfect sense to continue sharing the benefits with their Cadillac cousins.

cadillac cts-v 600 horsepower

Cadillac may not share the same accouterments attributed to the BMW M3 and the Mercedez-Benz C63 AMG, so GM may have decided to go another route. The CTS-V’s mantra must be, “if you can’t join them, beat them to the finish and steal their cake.” And who knows, maybe in 2009 the new Cadillac’s will finally escape the abundance of plastics that rob the luxurious feel from most GM interior spaces. Thus allowing the CTS-V to sit comfortably amongst their European classmates.

But don’t feel bad for the CTS-V. With 600-horses under the bonnet and upgrades to its suspension and brakes, the CTS-V will not suffer from any playground bullying.

They’ve targeted that by the end of 2012, nearly all of Ford’s transmissions ...

Ford introduces its 3.5 EcoBoost V6 engine this spring. This environmentally-friendly is coupled by a six-speed 6F-55 SelectShift automatic transmission that’s been configured to meet higher torque demands of the new twin-turbo direct fuel injection engine.

Both technologies will be available in Ford’s 2010 Lincoln MKS (see pic!). The 6F-55 transmission was developed from the successful blueprint of Ford’s 6F-50 transmission. Compared to the 6F-50 transmission, however, the 6F-55 is bulked up and strengthened to work with the EcoBoost V6’s architecture.

All changes were geared towards improved power and fuel efficiency. The modifications included friction material grooves that break up fluid flow and reduce clutch drag losses; nine wave CBLR; improved calibration measures; and a 15-degree-increase of start-to-open temperatures.

The torque of this transmission was also altered to improve the vehicle’s drivability. Together, the EcoBoost V6 and the 6F-55 automatic transmission are pegged to produce 355 horse power and 475 Nm of torque. Ford brags that this translates to higher power and better fuel-economy compared the V8 engine of Lexus GS460 and Infiniti M45.

Ford projects that both technologies will dominate their sustainability strategy for years to come. They’ve targeted that by the end of 2012, nearly all of Ford’s transmissions in North America will be converted to advanced six-speed gearboxes. Ford marks up 2013 as the year when nearly 90% of Ford’s North American vehicles will nestle EcoBoost engines.

The 6F-55 was produced at the Van Dyke Transmission Plant based in Sterling Heights, Michigan. This Ford Plant also produced the 6F-50 and 6F-35 transmissions. The plant is recognized as one of the Ford Centers of Excellence for six-speed transmissions.
