After our first drive of the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP we told you it drove like a BMW M5. Well, now you can get that M5-like performance for just half the price —$39,995.

Not too shabby if you ask us. Here's the news from Pontiac:

Pontiac today confirmed pricing for the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP will start at $39,995, including $685 destination and freight charges and $1,700 in applicable federal gas guzzler taxes. With 415 horsepower and 0-60 times well under 5.0 seconds, the G8 GXPs is the most powerful production Pontiac ever created and comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission or an optional ($695) six-speed manual transmission. A $900 sunroof option is also available.

Final EPA fuel economy ratings for the G8 GXP are 13 miles per gallon in the city, 20 miles per gallon on the highway.

Here's the full price breakdown for those interested:

$37,610 - base price
$685 - DFC
$1,700 - Federal gas guzzler
$39,995: TOTAL MSRP
$695 - Six-speed manual tranny
$40,690: TOTAL MSRP for MANUAL TRANNY

U.S. House Approves $14 Billion Auto Bailout Bill [Auto Industry Financing And Restructuring Act]

The US House approved the Auto Industry Financing and Restructuring Act (aka, "Bankruptcy Lite") by a vote of 237-170. It's morning again in America. Well, at least until the Senate gets involved tomorrow.

The U.S. House of Representatives approved HR 7321, the Auto Industry Financing and Restructuring Act. The bill provides an immediate $14 billion in loans to prevent the collapse of GM and Chrysler and set the stage for government stakes in automakers and Washington-directed restructurings. The vote took place at 8:46 PM this evening by a vote of 237 (Aye) to 170 (noes) to 1 (present) to 26 (not voting) setting up a showdown in the Senate where prospects for passage are not as certain. Redesigned Chevy Volt on Schedule for 2010

Volt Sneak Peek
Volt Sneak Peek

In GM: “I told you so” news, General Motors Corp announced on Thursday that the finalized design of the Chevy Volt will be done by mid-September and that 50 working prototypes should be ready by the end of 2008.  Amazingly, a handful of prototypes with production-ready parts are hoped to be ready in the next 10 days.

To recap, General Motors has been facing alot of skeptism since it announced that it was planning to have the Volt in production by 2010. The Volt is a huge part of a larger GM plan to move away from SUVs.

In two images (pictured above and below)  released with this announcement the Volt appears to be a sleeker version of the concept model GM unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in 2007, with a redesigned front end to improve aerodynamics.  According to GM it should be equal in that regard to the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.

Stating the obvious, one engineer says, “By minimizing aero drag, we can maximize the range of the battery.  So, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that my exterior design team spent countless hours in the wind tunnel with our aerodynamicist to refine the Volt’s exterior. We believe this was time well spent.  When you’re trying to extend gas-free driving of the vehicle, you’ll take all the efficiency you can get.”  The expectation is that the Volt will run for 40 miles on a lithium-ion battery pack that can be recharged at a standard electric outlet.

While GM’s bold predictions and aggressive approach to develop such a vehicle is commendable, the introduction of thousands of electric vehicles still depends on advances in lithium-ion battery technology that has yet to be engineered at a low enough cost than is currently feasible.  According to GM, “The future is to take the same range and the same original 40 miles but then have battery packs about half the size, twice the robustness and half the cost.”

For the Volt to be a success it also must be sold at a volume currently not achieved by the high priced low volume Tesla and other electric vehicles being designed.  GM, which has already featured the Volt in its advertising as part of a bid to improve its public image, is planning an initial volume of 10,000 vehicles.  According to some unofficial websites the estimated wait list for the Volt is over 30,000.  I’m betting that list will continue to get longer.

Mr. Wagoner Makes It To Washington, Driving Volt Mule To Morning Senate Hearing [Carpocalypse Now]

There's General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner, stepping from a Chevrolet Malibu hybrid last night at his hotel in Washington to the flashing bulbs of the paparazzi after driving from Detroit to testify at Congressional hearings for an auto industry not-a-bailout. If the not-so-Big Three automakers have learned anything since their last trip to Washington, it's the old way of doing business just won't fly. So the decision by auto executives to travel in hybrid cars rather than corporate jets is just the start to overhauling their image as the industry pleads its case for more than $25 billion in federal loans.

The next step? Heading over to a 9:30 AM rally at the corner of Delaware Ave. and C street just outside the Russell Senate Building and the 10:00 AM Senate hearing. To get there from his hotel? He'll be driving a Volt mule. Seriously.

Goodbye-amino? Pontiac could kill G8 ST; become one-car brand

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Pontiac G8 ST

It's been a bad month for Pontiac fans. While begging for money from Congress, GM mentioned its intentions to sacrifice the brand to aid the General's recovery and get a few billion from the feds in the process. Now comes word that GM may keep the brand around, but cut its lineup in half... or more.

Automotive News spoke with Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC, who said that Pontiac's Aveo-based 2010 G3 will sticker for $15,000, but says it's a short-term product for the brand. Unfortunately, Docherty also hints the G8 Sport Truck's lifespan could be even shorter. "We would be foolish if we didn't take a second look at whether or not that is the right thing to do."

In a separate AN article, Docherty goes even further and suggests Pontiac's lineup could be pared down from six vehicles to a single nameplate. According to Docherty, "We are not going to spend tons of money on product development" for Pontiac and that the Pontiac Torrent will be dropped for 2009.

So what will Pontiac be selling? According to Docherty, the G8 is the most likely candidate for GM's performance brand, and that the ideal future for Pontiac would be "very focused, very specialty or niche."

With the looming 2009 model year GM plans to stay ahead of the curve (if not muscle right through it) with their 600-horsepower Cadillac CTS-V. In the 2007 CTS-V resides a very respectable 400-horsepower power-plant based on the current Corvette platform. So since GM has developed their new 7.0 liter LS7 Corvette engine it seems to make perfect sense to continue sharing the benefits with their Cadillac cousins.

Cadillac may not share the same accouterments attributed to the BMW M3 and the Mercedez-Benz C63 AMG, so GM may have decided to go another route. The CTS-V’s mantra must be, “if you can’t join them, beat them to the finish and steal their cake.” And who knows, maybe in 2009 the new Cadillac’s will finally escape the abundance of plastics that rob the luxurious feel from most GM interior spaces. Thus allowing the CTS-V to sit comfortably amongst their European classmates.

But don’t feel bad for the CTS-V. With 600-horses under the bonnet and upgrades to its suspension and brakes, the CTS-V will not suffer from any playground bullying.
