Redesigned Chevy Volt on Schedule for 2010

Volt Sneak Peek
Volt Sneak Peek

In GM: “I told you so” news, General Motors Corp announced on Thursday that the finalized design of the Chevy Volt will be done by mid-September and that 50 working prototypes should be ready by the end of 2008.  Amazingly, a handful of prototypes with production-ready parts are hoped to be ready in the next 10 days.

To recap, General Motors has been facing alot of skeptism since it announced that it was planning to have the Volt in production by 2010. The Volt is a huge part of a larger GM plan to move away from SUVs.

In two images (pictured above and below)  released with this announcement the Volt appears to be a sleeker version of the concept model GM unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in 2007, with a redesigned front end to improve aerodynamics.  According to GM it should be equal in that regard to the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.

Stating the obvious, one engineer says, “By minimizing aero drag, we can maximize the range of the battery.  So, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that my exterior design team spent countless hours in the wind tunnel with our aerodynamicist to refine the Volt’s exterior. We believe this was time well spent.  When you’re trying to extend gas-free driving of the vehicle, you’ll take all the efficiency you can get.”  The expectation is that the Volt will run for 40 miles on a lithium-ion battery pack that can be recharged at a standard electric outlet.

While GM’s bold predictions and aggressive approach to develop such a vehicle is commendable, the introduction of thousands of electric vehicles still depends on advances in lithium-ion battery technology that has yet to be engineered at a low enough cost than is currently feasible.  According to GM, “The future is to take the same range and the same original 40 miles but then have battery packs about half the size, twice the robustness and half the cost.”

For the Volt to be a success it also must be sold at a volume currently not achieved by the high priced low volume Tesla and other electric vehicles being designed.  GM, which has already featured the Volt in its advertising as part of a bid to improve its public image, is planning an initial volume of 10,000 vehicles.  According to some unofficial websites the estimated wait list for the Volt is over 30,000.  I’m betting that list will continue to get longer.

Automakers have been hit hard this year due to declining sales and those that relied heavily on SUV and truck sales are even worse off, specifically the Big 3. GM has seen its sales drop off drastically since no one wants its many pickups and large SUVs.

Mr. Wagoner Makes It To Washington, Driving Volt Mule To Morning Senate Hearing [Carpocalypse Now]

There's General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner, stepping from a Chevrolet Malibu hybrid last night at his hotel in Washington to the flashing bulbs of the paparazzi after driving from Detroit to testify at Congressional hearings for an auto industry not-a-bailout. If the not-so-Big Three automakers have learned anything since their last trip to Washington, it's the old way of doing business just won't fly. So the decision by auto executives to travel in hybrid cars rather than corporate jets is just the start to overhauling their image as the industry pleads its case for more than $25 billion in federal loans.

The next step? Heading over to a 9:30 AM rally at the corner of Delaware Ave. and C street just outside the Russell Senate Building and the 10:00 AM Senate hearing. To get there from his hotel? He'll be driving a Volt mule. Seriously.

The 1979 Chevy K10 Starts Its Striptease

The restoration process on the 1979 Chevy K10 has officially begun. If you read the last installment, you know I already Photochopped a picture to establish what I want it to look like (black and silver two-tone), but now it’s time to get off the computer, get out the tools and implement the game plan.

The plan is pretty simple — something I’ve heard hundreds of times from other collectors: “just do the prep work yourself and then have Maaco spray it.” The premise actually makes sense. Maaco employs people who day-in and day-out use a steady hand to spray in the same quality booth as the high-price shops. Where they usually fail is in skimping on the bodywork and prep. So to get the best of both worlds, the collector does all the body work and prep and Maaco sprays. Sure, they also use cheap paint, but how much worse can it possibly be than 1979 Chevy OEM?

Okay, considering I’ve really never done serious bodywork or prep, there is some doubt to the results. It will either come out with a great bang-for-the-buck exterior or it will suck worse than Matt LeBlanc’s Friends spin-off.

I pulled the K10 into the Sound Classics garage and started stripping. Once I was naked, I put on some clothes that I didn’t mind ruining…as far as the truck was concerned, this meant removing most things glued, taped, clipped, bolted and screwed on to the exterior.

Like many trucks of the era, the K10 has body strips held on by two-sided foam tape. The rubber and plastic strips pull off easily, but foam tape remains stuck on. To get it off, I employed my middle finger and used a tedious process of rubbing and rolling. By the time all the tape was removed entirely, my fingers felt like I had just stood in on bass for a four-hour performance with a Rush cover band.

Wheel well moldings, side mirrors, tailgate cover, and cab stainless trim all came off pretty easily, but again, it was a tedious process. I placed all the parts safely in the garage and used a magnetic tray for all the little screws and bolts.

Before commencing sanding I needed to wash off over a year of dust, dirt and grime. Nothing worse than “decreasing the grit” value by dragging dirt around under the sandpaper.

It occurred to me that I’d need to attempt to remove the pinstripes before sanding. The tape strips had been clear-coated over, but had pulled off in some sections already. At this point, my six-year-old daughter asked if she could help, so I put her (and her pink-painted fingernails) to work picking and peeling. Within about 20 minutes, the truck was sticker-free and ready for sanding.

Tune in next time for the continuing saga, at which point we’ll learn what happens when there’s no law in place prohibiting Sam from using a dual-action sander.
