A look back at the AMC Eagle and the mini-tank that was

There was a time back in the early 80’s when AWD in cars was not so familiar. Even the SUV was yet to be hatched on the American consumer. It was the AMC Eagle that brough fuel economy and AWD safety to the sedan (er, wagon) market, or so they said.
The AMC Eagle wagon holds a special place in my own history as my family found the means to burn through two of them. During those West Virginia Winter months there was never a concern that snow or ice would keep us from getting to a grocery store that was closed due to the weather (grrr). There was no form of inclimate weather that could come between our Eagle and our intended destination. However the same could not be said for those transmissions we ran through before moving on in our modern car shopping.
Nothing like a good look back to remind us why we shop for the things we do in cars. Just the same let’s take a look at what those marketing geniuses at AMC put together to get Americans excited about the then new Eagle.

A special thanks to those at Jalopnik for that reminder.

SIA Flashback – New Life for Old Fords and Suddenly, It’s 1958

Suddenly, it's 1958

These two stories from SIA #48, December 1978, would obviously not fly in today’s political climate. A bunch of 1958 Chevrolets still serving as rental car duty at a nearly forgotten airport? Crush them all, and give the fleet sales to a needy automaker. Rebody a Model A chassis and spare it from the junkyard? Crush it, and open up a line of credit to buy a new car. It’s amazing the editors of SIA even took the time to write about, much less appreciate, these old clunkers.

GM Plans Plug-In Hybrid

Plugin

We don’t normally cover industry news that won’t impact consumers in the near future, but this is really intriguing. GM is investing some of the money it’s saving from massive cost cutting back into green technologies. One of its projects includes a plug-in hybrid car that will allow owners to recharge the battery at any standard electric outlet. The car will run on the electric motor until the battery expires, then switch to a gasoline engine, thus making it a hybrid. This is considerably different from current hybrid technology, which allows a car to start from a standing stop and maneuver at low speeds using electric power, then switches to the gasoline engine when more speed or performance is needed.

The project is called the “I-car,” and we’ll admit to our surprise at the news. We’ll warn you, though, that these projects often don’t come to fruition and we wouldn’t be surprised if some other technology or trend came along to divert the research.

The Hurricane That’ll Bring Down the Auto Industry (But We WILL Rebuild)

It's hurricane season for the auto industry

It's hurricane season for the auto industry

I’ve had enough. I’ve decided that it’s time to let nature take its course with the auto industry.

As jgoods posted earlier, one way or another the car companies are going to go through a bankruptcy. It’s just a matter of what form it takes.

When a hurricane is approaching the Gulf Coast, there’s nothing our government can do but sit back, evacuate people, and hope that rebuilding doesn’t take too long. The collapse of the U.S. automakers is a similar storm, and there’s no stopping it.

Instead of spending money on saving the companies, let’s start thinking about how we can help rebuild them after they shatter. GM is on the right track by eliminating brands and focusing on becoming a leaner company. Doing so is like boarding up their windows to help weather the storm.

American automakers have lived in excess and luxury for years, and the reality of it all is coming crashing down. In this storm, people will lose their jobs. Car brands will disappear. How much is the government willing to spend to prevent this? I think taxpayers have spent enough money on prevention, and now we need to focus on response - getting those who lose their jobs back to work, either in the auto industry or rebuilding the highways our cars drive.

The government is shouldering all the financial responsibility to save an industry that employs a lot of its citizens. That’s noble, but misguided. If a private organization (Big Oil, anyone?) wants to invest in saving the car companies, by all means, let them. Government involvement, though, should be limited to overseeing the bankruptcies and subsequent rebuilding.

I agree the U.S. can’t stand by and let the domestic auto manufacturers disappear forever. I’d just feel better if we invested in the rebuilding of leaner companies, rather than supporting the modern ways that have become so archaic and wasteful. Bring on the storm.

Do you care what happens to the U.S. automakers? Would their collapse affect you?
